the final essay

Ultimately, according to Kingsolver’s novel, what is the most important truth about Africa (and possibly, but not necessarily, colonialism)? Using at least three different characters and the final chapter of the novel, explain which of the five women best understands this essential quality of Africa.

If they will help, consider the following questions.
What are the effects of colonialism in The Poisonwood Bible?
How are the colonizers affected by Africa?
What attitudes do they take towards it and the people there?
If the four daughters represent four common Western reactions to Africa, where does Orleanna fit?
When they reunite in Africa, the Prices are looking for Kilanga and they are told there is no such village. Why does Kingsolver include this part of the story?
Who is speaking in the final chapter?

Use each other’s journal reflections and passages, but otherwise, use only ONE source—the book. Do not use any of those on-line or printed Cliff’s Notes type explanations. They are fast and often easy, but they are dangerous. In this case, they are forbidden.

I will need to see an outline of this paper before you turn in the final copy.

FINAL PAPER DATE DUE: Turned into turnitin.com by January 24th.
