Poisonwood Bible

Look back at the first three or four pages of the story.

1. Provide three or four words or phrases that are used to describe Africa. What can you infer from these?

2. Who is speaking here and how do you know?

Here are two focus questions to respond to in your journal. Ideally, you'd include a great quotation, but I won't require that.

TOTC Book One

These should be at least six or seven sentences and should be done by 8 pm on the Weds before the reading is due. Take time to log in and read what people have said.

Please contribute a quote journal. Pick one line from the text. (No more than two sentences.) Type it in with page number. Respond to the line. What made you choose it? Why might it be important? How does it connect to another passage?

Choose anything you like; consider focusing on these images and motifs: doubles, water, sun/light, stone.

Q1 Outside Reading (c1&2)

When you complete your book, post a review. Use the format below.

Title:

Author:

Best Line: (This could be a sentence or a passage.)

Summary: (This should intrigue the reader of the review and be no more than 5 sentences)

Most interesting or thoughtprovoking aspect of the book: (this could be a question the book makes you think about, a character you respond to strongly, a scene that made you laugh...)

Rating & opinion: (Give this 1-5 stars where 5= must read, 4= good, 3= worth the time 2= not so great, but someone might like it 1= don't bother. Then give a sentence or two expalining your rating. What makes the book a success or failure?)

Reviewer and favorites: (your name, and two other books you like)

Speech deadline

For a whole slew of reasons, I am going to make speeches optional on Tuesday and Wednesday. If you're ready, you can go. If not we'll start drawing names on Thursday. That means many of you will go the next week. This should alleviate some of the pressure, but look ahead and plan. If the week of 28th is crazy for you, go this coming week.

Happy practicing. You'll be great.
